It was time. With so much rain lately and more in the forecast, it was time to get the rest of the tomatos (and a few winter squash) out of the garden before they started splitting. This is about 15 varieties of heirloom tomatos, nearly filling our large patio table. 😍 I've already made loads of sauce and have a counter full of ripe tomatos in the house. I'm going to be busy the next while as these ripen in the house. What do you like to make with fresh tomatos?

My cumquat tree provides some canopy shade for my multiplying strawberries. I’ve got all the fruit bagged up in little organza bags so that I’m the only one who gets to eat them 🙅🏼‍♀️ 🐛🐦🦎 🐜 😜 bag idea “borrowed” from @urbanveggiepatch 👌 . #strawberries #cumquat #mystrawberypatch #growyourown #instagarden #growyourownfood #inmygarden #gardeningaustralia #eatwhatigrow #ilovegardening #myediblegarden #growyourfood #backyardveggies #backyardgardener #urbangarden #myveggiepatch #aussiegardener #thehappygardeninglife #gardeningformysoul #gardenlife #eattherainbow #myveggiegarden #growingfood

Several months ago, my lemon tree suffered a devastating bud drop. I went from having the promise of ~50 incoming lemons to zero. I was pretty sure it was the end for this little guy, but I fertilized it and watered it and did everything The Internet told me, and look! Tiiiiiiiiiny itty bitty little lemons. Transitioning to freelance life has been a roller coaster so far. I’m so glad I’m doing it, I’m deeply excited, and yet, as always, I crave structure. As everyone tells me, structure will come as I learn to create it. I have to constantly remind myself to be patient with that process. Patience with myself... that’s another thing that doesn’t come naturally. I’m happy, looking at my baby lemons. It’s totally possible that they’ll fall again, and I’ll have to try a different method to treat them. These things happen. It’s all part of the process. Good things just take time to heal and grow. But they do grow! They do. They just need a little extra love. . . . . . #garden #citrus #music #composer #producer #womancomposer #freelance #freelancer #freelancelife #entrepreneur #backyardgardener

🥭🍒🌴Papaya is starting to look like a real tree! I’ve decided to plant a few more fruit trees/bushes in containers and place them on an unexplored stretch of land: OUR FRONT YARD.🍎🍐So far pear, peach, and pomegranate are on my tentative list. Drop your other fruit suggestions below!🍌🍒Bonus points for container friendly variations.

I littered planted these seeds 3 days ago and they’re the first to sprout. They’re Dragoon Organic Lettuce from @johnnys_seeds. A super hardy variety and I cannot wait to get them in the ground 💕 • • #plantlady #instagarden #zone9 #zone9garden #zone9a #zone9agarden #socalgardening #menifee #menifeegardens #backyardgardener #vegitablegarde

A 5 gallon bucket of orange rinds —> orange juice. I had a good crop this year, more fruit than past years. Some citrusy goodness when it still feels like summer. #orangetree #orangejuice #homegrown #backyardgardener #backyardgarden #foodforest

This looks like the last of our summer veggies. Time to roast and freeze these onions and shallots to use throughout the year. I’m surprised my zucchini has lasted this long! I planted them in March and it’s now September and I’ve found 2 zucchinis. Cutting back the leaves behind every zucchini on the plant has really helped with the powdery mildew. Definitely using this method again next year. Now, I can start thinking about my winter veggies👩🏻‍🌾 #wallawallaonions #shallots #zucchini #gardensnack #gardentotablefeast #backyardgardener #backyardfarmer #instagardener #spring #kitchentable #growyourownfood #farmtotable #urbangardener #urbanhomestead #goathill #organic #vegetables #ediblegarden #permaculture #gardeningsoutherncalifornia #zone10a #zone10b #socalgarden #socalgardener #socalgardening #ocgardener #therealoc #ediblelandscape

They may not be the biggest, but they are our first Bell Boy Peppers 💚

Harvest season in full swing at our casa! We didn’t intend to plant potatoes this year but our neighbor had a few leftover purple seed potatoes so we planted them amongst the pumpkins and got a nice little harvest. So many tomatoes and peppers to process- lots of late nights of canning ahead for us. Currently harvesting potatoes, cucumbers, edible pumpkins, spaghetti squash, acorn squash, beets, chard, Egyptian onions, celery, big boy tomatoes, sweet 100 tomatoes, poblanos, jalapeños, Serrano, bell peppers, zucchini, raspberries, strawberries, plums, apples... Working on juicing beets/celery/cukes, canning tomato sauce, making fresh salsa, pairing a homemade Sweet 100 ketchup with purple potato fries, pickling jalapeños and cucumbers, jarring hot sauce, roasting poblanos and squash seeds, making pumpkin pie filling, baking zucchini bread, and learning to make plum wine! #fallharvest #coloradogram #coloradogardening #zone5b #gardenofeden #crazyplantlady #backyardgardener #harvesting #vegetablegarden #thereshegrows #homegrown #homegrownfood #growyourfood #growyourownveg #wfpb #veganaf #vegansofcolorado #coloradovegans #vegetablepatch #fromthegarden #gardenlife #growthmindset #eatplants #plantstrong #fueledbyplants #pumpkinspiceeverything

A quick trip to the nursery today for new hibiscus plants. There are so many varieties of colors to choose from. I love this tangerine color and how the pedals fold over one another #backyardgardener #hibiscusflower #heboughtyellowhibiscus #goingbacktoresting

Toured the Angostura plant and got a good history of why Trinidad and Tobago is the only place in the world that Angostura Bitters is produced. Well these are pretty! Sunflower Pro Cut Red from @floretflower. They are just starting to bloom and are a bit smaller than I thought they would be- but still beautiful! #2littleacres #backyardgardener #flowergardens #sunflowers

With confidence I can say this is the prettiest flower I have ever grown 🌸 _ My last flower bed went in late, so a lot of my flowers are blooming a bit later than usual, but better late than never. Honestly this flower was growing so slow I wasn't sure I'd get to see what it was before the frost came. I always have the seeds I plant on grid paper so I can keep everything straight. Max, my dog had other plans this year and shredded each and every grid paper with my flowers, herbs, and veggies. _ The veggies are easy enough to know what is what, but the flowers that I planted this year (mostly all new seeds for me) were a different story. Each flower that has come up has been a fun surprise, and I'm so happy I got to see what this one was. It's a dahlia seed that I was so excited for when I ordered it this winter. Unfortunately it's too cold in my zone so I will either dig it up and protect it in my basement, or harvest the seeds from it and plant a million of them next year. Anyone have a preference for what they do?

Biggest tomato so far, and I predict fig jam in our very near future. #backyardgardener #fruit

I really love that my okra is doing so well this year. And it's even making some new friends 🤗🐞 The plants I collected these seeds from didn't do very well because I just stuck them in the ground with not really any soil, or food. Go figure 😂 But this year, direct sowing the seeds from those plants into proper soil is giving them new life. Last year the plants only reached a final height of maybe 1 1/2 or 2 feet. I think these plants have surpassed their parents' height and they're just kicking into full swing. This makes my heart happy 😊💖 #growsomeshit #okra #grownfromseed #gardeninglife #backyardgardener #seedsavers #growyourownfood #gyo

Impromptu harvest. We have a variety of pumpkins, squashes and courgettes, borlotti beas, runner beans, broad beans, purple beans, carrots, a mini celeriac and some radishes. Not a bad hours work. I’m getting a head start on my Sunday baking sessions now that the seasons are turning with @melonmonologues amazing Garden Bread, which is a delightful combo of banana, zucchini, carrot, apple and cinnamon and basically tastes like happiness. She sent me home with a loaf when I visited her last weekend and it’s quickly become life in our house. If you weren’t totally on top of it like I was with your screenshot finger when she posted it in her stories, that’s ok because she added a highlight! Now that Garden Bread is a new staple, I also gave myself approval to swap apple sauce for roasted or canned pumpkin, and when I ran out of cinnamon it wasn’t a big deal because I had pumpkin pie spice. As Melon says, you can’t mess it up. It’s so dang good. So I made two giant loaves. And lots of muffins. With nuts, cause I am. Also, her house is featured in @betterhomesandgardens magazine this month. Casual. #iknowher What’s your favorite way to usher in fall in the kitchen? Happy Sunday friends!

Reposted from @hestihhakim Bunga sawi bisa dimakan? Rasanya bagaimana? Simple Kan #growyourownfood #growwhatyoueat #ibuberkebun #ibuberkebun #backyardgardener -

Celery tunnel from mid August. This has been the most Low-Maintence Crop in the garden this year.✔️ We have only been watering when needed to maintain good moisture levels, but other than that it has been pest free! 🌿 If you want to try growing celery, either buy transplants in the spring or start your celery indoors 10 weeks before your last frost date❄️ 🌿 As always, the celery bed was composted in the spring before planting and we practice no dig/no till to feed the earthworms, keep the mycorrhizal fungi intake, and keep an intact soil structure that holds water and air. Gardening is all about soil health and feeding the soil, not the plant. Also, the no dig method also promotes less weeds - bonus! I think we all can appreciate that! 🌿 Celery is a slow grower, so if you're wanting to harvest a full celery head you will have to wait until the fall. OR You can harvest large individual celery stalks from the outside of the plant as you like through the season. We opted for a bit of both - we leave the majority of the celery to be harvested as full heads in the fall for soups, but harvest individual outer stalks for weekly use from a few select plants. 🌿
